Publication Education Exercise for the Classroom: Reading and Typing
Grades 9 - 12
This lesson has been derived from the literacy essay I have provided in my philosophy section
Once the students have written their first drafts, I will split the class into pairs and require that each group obtain one laptop. From there, I will ask for each student to take turns alternating from reading to typing another student's paper. But here's the catch, the student who has written the paper must be the one who is typing as the other student reads his or her paper aloud. Of course, it would be rather difficult to read and retype both papers in one session so whatever time I give the class for editing workshop, will be the time allowed for this editing process. Thus, in doing this type of editing, it will encourage every student to be more attentive to improving his or her classmate's paper and to share ideas.
Instead of just rushing through another student's paper, reading and retyping forces the students to deeply engage in improving their writing. I believe that it is helpful for students to hear another student reading their paper because not every student reads every sentence the same way; and I believe it's helpful for the actual writer to be typing his or her paper as the other student reads aloud because once the reader gets on a roll, it is sometimes arduous for him to catch some errors. In that case, as the student is retyping his paper, he can say, "Wait, read that sentence again"; and if the reader does so and he notices that the sentence sounds rather awkward as well, the two of them can put their heads together and figure out a way to make sound as smooth as butter. Another point to mention is that this process avoids the over dramatic use of any red marking utensil. Therefore, any student who in fact has some form of anxiety towards the red sea, using this method will probably alleviate some of that anxiety. Alas, this is just a small sample of how I would use "Publication Month for Kids" in my Secondary Education English class.
