This is a fantastic read! Appleman gives fantastic advice on how to really relate the literature that you're reading to the students. Most importantly, she gives great ideas on how to relate particularly old text to modern times through very fun activities.
3) Theory to Adolescents (2nd Edition)
By Jeffrey Wilhelm
If the theoretical aspect of English interests you, I suggest that you read this text. As a matter of fact, if you have no knowledge the current theories (like myself), I believe that it is important that you grab this book. This book also provides insightful lessons that will have our students practicing the different perspectives of all the different theories.
4) The Shame of the Nation: The Restoration of Apartheid Schooling in America
By Jonathan Kozol
This is wonderful book that demonstrates the demolition of American Education as we know it. This work will really encourage you to look at yourself as a teacher and will show you if you need to change some teaching habits.
